Projects
1. Child and family counselling, child protection services, adoption and foster-care services. 2. Child Abuse Treatment and Training Services (CATTS) for sexually abused children. Further assistance is offered by way of court preparation, counselling for the non-offending parent, follow-up on court cases and the provision of expert witness testimony by our social workers. Our therapy spectrum covers individual, play, family and marital elements. This unit also offers training courses for other professionals, lay counsellors and community members related to child sexual abuse. Group work is provided to court mandated adult offenders. 3. Residential care for 30 babies at the Princess Alice Adoption Home, as well as accommodation and counselling services for destitute pregnant mothers. 4. Residential care for 90 children at the Othandweni Children's Home ranging in age from birth to 18 years and a crèche for toddlers at the centre. 5. Day care and an early childhood development (ECD) facility at Masibambisane Centre for 220 orphaned and vulnerable children (OVCs). A holistic service is rendered with support groups run for those who are infected by the disease, nutrition services, general counselling and support programmes offered for gogos to help address behaviour issues exhibited by (some) children. 6. Thembalethu Life Skills and Economic Empowerment Centre provides poverty alleviation, skills training and preventive programmes for inner city residents, both women and young girls. 7. Community economic empowerment and capacity building programmes, workshops on parenting skills and preventive work, and life skills training. ‘A Chance to Play’ which is an initiative aimed at protecting children while simultaneously using sport as a vehicle to teach life skills. 8. Advocacy for the rights of children and families through various welfare forums and networks that has seeing JCW influence various aspects of the Child Care Act. 9. Aganang Training Centre for social auxiliary workers. 10. Involvement in a SADC network on Child Trafficking: the Southern African Network Against trafficking and Abuse of Children (SANTAC) and the execution of an informative and awareness campaign against women and child trafficking in conjunction with UNIFEM. 11. Facilitate and manage a forum of collective community-based organisations (CBOs) serving orphaned and vulnerable children indirectly, predominantly as a result of HIV and AIDS: the OVC forum comprises 65 CBOs: 25 000 (approx) orphaned and vulnerable children served. This Forum has mentored a select number of CBOs who are now able to independently manage their organisations.
